Transitions Column: “You Have the Right to Remain Silent” Dickey County Leader, November 28, 2019 By Ken Smith   “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak up and remove all doubt.”  The quote, often ascribed to Abraham Lincoln, echoes Proverbs 17:28, “Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.”  Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address is long on meaning and short on words, and so it endures.      Calvin Coolidge (US...

This is a public report from the Ellendale Public School, published at the close of the 1896 school year.  It is part of the holdings of the Coleman Memorial Museum in Ellendale. Contrary to modern practice, many schools of the late 19th and early 20th century were very deliberate in placing student's rankings before the public.  Presumably the practice spurred excellence, though from a later perspective it would be criticized as a violation of privacy and form of public shaming.  ...

WHAT IS THE WALK OF FAME? by Ken Schmierer, who conceived the Idea The idea for the Ellendale Walk of Fame came to fruition in 2007 with a very successful roll out. Our intent was to Tell the Ellendale Story through choosing very successful people to be in our Walk of Fame. We did not want to honor these recipients as much as we wanted to honor the small town where they grew up. I am absolutely convinced that Ellendale has more successful professional people than cities much larger than us. We...

Byron H. Tibbetts (1860-1905) was a farmer who lived near Ellendale North Dakota until he died in the wake of a tragic prairie fire.  This memorial book was compiled in his honor.  It is especially noteworthy that Tibbetts was a prominent member of the Ellendale Baptist congregation, and that he was very active in temperance work.  As an individual who was seen as on the front lines of social reform, his death came as a blow and his friends and associates sought to memorialize him with...

This is the 1908 Bulletin for the State Normal & Industrial School at Ellendale.  The institution had been renamed the previous year, the original name being the State Manual Training School at Ellendale.  Of special note in this edition are addresses by President Kern, the second leader of the institution following Warren E. Hicks, and by Albert Dunphy, who began teaching industrial arts at the school at its start in 1899.  Also of note are the illustrations and discussions of workshop...

These are catalogs from the State Normal & Industrial School in Ellendale, North Dakota, from 1911 to 1919.  This file was obtained from a scan taken from editions housed at the University of Illinois Library.   The school began operation in 1899 under the name Manual Training School and was changed to the State Normal and Industrial School in 1907.   Other catalogs (both earlier and later) may be found in this collection (cliosmith/Coleman Museum) as we are able to prepare them. ...

This is a recording made November 1978, featuring narration by Ed Leiby, son of the original Ed Leiby who came to Ellendale to manage the Milwaukee Depot in 1882.  Ned Leiby, grandson of the depot agent, wrote in 1984 that his (Ned's) dad "was Ellendale in many ways, but so too Ellendale was dad." This is one of several surviving recordings made by the second-generation Leiby.  He used to visit local elementary classrooms and walk kids through much of the local history.  His...

This article provides a detailed explanation of the origins, purpose and plan of the Demonstration Rural School (a.k.a. the "model school") built in 1918 on the campus of the State Normal and Industrial School in Ellendale, North Dakota.  Training teachers for rural schools was one of the primary purposes of the State Normal and Industrial School at Ellendale.  The SNI had the advantage, among teacher-training institutions, of a focus on manual arts.  It was therefore an excellent...

This is a church directory published in 1994, 12 years after the Ellendale Assembly of God in Ellendale, North Dakota moved into its new building, which was the former home of the Presbyterian-Methodist congregation.  The church was also often called "the downtown church" to distinguish it from Trinity Christian Center, which was the Assembly of God congregation located on the nearby Trinity Bible College campus. Many of the individuals depicted in this 1994 book were students of...

Louise Pinkney Sooy & Virginia Woodbridge - Plan Your Own Home (Stanford, 1946) was a popular guide for middle class families seeking pleasant living situations in the late 1940s and 1950s.  Its publication date of 1946 suggests an appeal to the postwar generation, which had a widely shared goal of settling down in the suburbs in a peaceful, life-affirming setting.  This book provides remarkable attention to details about home engineering, with plenty of emphasis on arrangement and...

This is a 60-page booklet published in December 1967 for the purpose of describing the town of Ellendale and its various businesses, public services, infrastructure, churches, amenities, and potential as a place to live and/or invest and/or start a new business.  The study bears the imprimatur of Earl H. Redlin, who was the mayor at the time. This is an important historical document as it represents something of a snapshot of the town of Ellendale at one point in its history. It should be...

This is a mimeographed booklet created by members of the Ellendale High School Class of 1965 for their ten year reunion.  The 20-page booklet contains memories and class prophecies, and information about what many of the graduates had done since 1965.  This document provides an interesting parallel to the topics discussed in the bestselling book _What Really Happened to the Class of '65_ by Michael Medved and Irving Wallichinski.  That book gives biographies of graduates from a high school...

This is a survey study of the State Teachers College at Ellendale, North Dakota, submitted in 1962 to the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, for purposes of accreditation.  The State Teachers College had a long history, from its founding in 1899 as the State Manual Training School and its 1907 name change to the State Normal and Industrial School at Ellendale, to its later elevation to college status and then the name change to State Teachers College (about 1960), and then to...
